Commute Transportation Study
Do you commute to work, school, regular medical appointments, or for other purposes? What times do you commute? How often do you commute?
These are the kinds of questions being asked of residents within Mendocino County’s inland valley as part of a Commute Transportation Study.
Purpose
The purpose of the study is to better understand travel commute patterns and preferences of inland valley residents in an effort to better meet County residents’ wide range of travel needs. Based on the findings of the study, MTA will develop a phased commute transportation implementation plan that could include transit service changes such as new routes, service frequency, and/or the coordination of car or vanpools. The study, funded by a Federal Transit Administration grant, will focus on understanding where, when, and how residents travel for work, education, healthcare, and other purposes.
Involvement Opportunities
Community involvement is a critical component of this study. Public input will help determine the routes and services available to MTA customers. Residents are encouraged to participate in the following ways:
- Onboard Passenger Survey: MTA passengers had the opportunity to complete an onboard survey to indicate their current use of MTA’s services and how MTA could better serve its passengers. The survey was available on all MTA buses from September 14 to 19.
- Online Survey: Designed to gather information from residents who do not use MTA services, or are infrequent users, this survey was available through November 21, 2009. Learn more and take the survey now!
- Comment Form: Residents are invited to provide comments at anytime via the online comment form found below. Tell us in your own words how we can better serve your commute needs!
- Community/Individual Presentation: Study team members are available to speak to individuals, community organizations, non-profits, or businesses about the commute study. Please complete the comment form below to request a meeting.
- Information Sharing: MTA encourages and thanks you for sharing this information with others you know who may have an interest in MTA’s services. You are welcome to forward the press release to help spread the word.

Study Schedule
Through November 2009, the study team will collect data from residents via surveys, interviews, presentations, and individual comments. This data will be used to help draft a commute transportation implementation plan that is targeted for completion in early 2010. Subsequently, this plan will be presented to the MTA Board of Directors for consideration of approval.

“Our goal with this study is to help ensure that we are meeting the needs of our residents. If our current routes and services aren’t meeting those needs, we want to hear about it and figure out a way to better meet those needs.”
